My approach to fashion photography

I’m a Melbourne fashion photographer working across editorials, designer campaigns, lookbooks, model portfolios and runway photography. My work brings together expressive portraits and attention to the clothing, from an individual garment to a complete collection.

Explore my campaign for RESH the label on the Mornington Peninsula and my Zian Couture ready-to-wear campaign in the selected work above. Each gallery offers a closer look at the photographs and the designer’s collection.

Planning starts with your brief: the collection or subject, creative references, intended image use and timing. From there, we discuss the visual direction, shot list, lighting and practical requirements of the shoot. I work with designers, models and creative teams to develop an approach suited to the project.

For brands, the brief may call for campaign imagery, a consistent lookbook or photographs for an online store. For models, the focus is a portfolio that shows expression and versatility. My services and portfolio pages will help you explore the options before we discuss your shoot.

A useful starting point is to think about where your photographs will be seen. A designer lookbook needs to communicate the collection clearly, while a fashion editorial can build a more expressive visual story. Commercial campaign imagery connects the clothes with a wider brand direction. Sharing the intended use helps us discuss which approach, image formats and combinations of photographs will best support the brief.

Clothing remains central to the image. Shape, texture, movement and the way a garment sits on the body all influence how I approach a fashion photograph. Lighting and composition need to work with the styling, rather than compete with it. Creative references give us a shared language for discussing the mood, colour palette and balance between strong individual frames and a cohesive series.

For a model portfolio, the photographs should give a clear sense of the person in front of the camera. Expression, posture and movement can create variety without losing the connection between images. The visual direction can range from a simple portrait to a more developed fashion concept. We can discuss the purpose of the portfolio and the kinds of images you want to build on.

Runway photography presents a different challenge: the clothing, model and movement come together in a brief moment. My fashion portfolio includes runway work alongside campaigns, editorial imagery and portraits. Looking across these galleries can help you identify the qualities you respond to, whether that is the lighting, an expression, a particular setting or the relationship between the styling and the photograph.

When you get in touch, include a short description of the project, your preferred timing and the intended use of the images. For a brand shoot, details such as the collection size, number of looks and proposed location are useful starting points. For a model portfolio or creative editorial, share your references and what you hope to explore. These details give our initial conversation a practical focus and help establish the next steps together. If you have a creative team in mind, include who is involved and which parts of the brief are already confirmed, so we can keep the planning focused and realistic.
